Born into a Jewish family in Munich in 1919, Peter Selz watched the ascension of the Third Reich. Forced to wear a star, forbidden to attend school, his home destroyed and the art he loved labeled degenerate, Selz escaped to America, eventually becoming the chief curator of the Museum of Modern Art. His daughter, Gabrielle, grew up in a home full of celebrated artists in the heyday of Abstract Expressionism, from Rothko and de Kooning to Christo. Gabrielle Selz has published in magazines and newspapers including The New York Times, Newsday, Fiction, and The Huffington Post. She is the recipient of a fellowship in Nonfiction Literature from the New York Foundation for the Arts and a Moth Story Slam winner. Call to inquire about transportation from the MBJCC. JCW Miami Event: Survivors Of Child Sexual Abuse Share Their Message of Strength

Aventura Chabad

2015-02-15, 7:00pm to 10:00pm

Help Jewish Community Watch combat the shame and secrecy that surrounds child sexual abuse in our communities by joining us for a powerful night of awareness, education and healing. Whether you're a survivor yourself, have a loved one who is a survivor, or just want to support survivors and protect children, this is an event you don't want to miss! This event will be moderated by Rosh Lowe, Fox News Reporter and will feature speakers: Meyer Seewald - Founder of JCW; Eli Nash - Survivor of CSA; Bibi Morsow - Saul - Survivor of CSA; and Dr. Norman Goldwasser - Trauma Psychologist Follow this link ( to see JCW's last event in Miami - noted as many to be a "wake up call" and a "raw, powerful and emotional evening" where a community "opened their souls" to "provide an opportunity for victims to come forward, to speak out, to share some of the horrors of their abuse, to share some of the pain and suffering of their trauma". We all share a responsibility to our children and to our community. According to statistics, 1 out of every 3 girls and 1 out of every 5 boys will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18. We cannot afford to ignore our children's pain! We must join together and get educated on the matter to support those that fight for Hashem's children. 70 Years after Auschwitz and The Rise of Anti-Semitism

Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center

2015-02-23, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

On January 27, 2015 the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz was commemorated on what is known as International Holocaust Memorial Day. The last few years have seen a noticeable increase in anti-Semitism, especially in Europe. This was most notable during the summer of 2014 Israel-Hamas war. As historical memory of the Holocaust fades and as more and more anti-Israel demonstrations cross into blatant anti-Semitism the questions is raised: Is there a connection between these two phenomena? Dr. Robert Jan Van Pelt is a Holocaust scholar and professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He is the author of nine books and an expert on the architecture of Auschwitz. A Holocaust Education Week Event.

One of the great untold stories of World War II, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese General Consul in Bordeaux, France, in defiance of strict orders from his government, issued 30,000 visas to refugees (including 10,000 Jews) fleeing the Germans. Holocaust scholar Yehuda Bauer describes Sousa Mendes’ actions as one of the greatest acts of rescue in World War II. The docudrama Disobedience explores the events that led up to his fateful decision to issue the visas, the drama of carrying out his decision before he was stopped, and the consequences of his actions for him and for his family. MBJCC Meet the Author presents Ari Goldman

2015-02-25, 7:30 pm

Have you ever dreamed of starting something new? Be inspired by this true story. If you thought a fiddler on the roof was in a precarious position, imagine what happens when a middle-aged professor with a bad back takes up the cello. Ari Goldman hasn’t played in 25 years, but he’s decided to give the cello one last chance. He secures a seat in his son’s youth orchestra, and then he’s ready for the big time: the Late Starters Orchestra of New York City—an amateur orchestra for beginning or recently returning adult players. We accompany Goldman to LSO rehearsals (their motto is “If you think you can play, you can”) and sit in on his son’s lessons, and we wonder whether Goldman will be good enough to perform at his musical coming out: his upcoming 60th birthday party. Coming to the rescue is the ghost of Goldman’s very first cello teacher, Mr. J, who continues to inspire and guide him. Live musical entertainment will be featured.
