An evening of fine food, fun and entertainment celebrating the Pageantry of Purim.
A Night at the Museum: A Celebration of the Pageantry of Purim Thursday, March 13, 2014, 6:30-10:00PM Join us for the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU’s annual festive event, A Night at the Museum: A Celebration of the Pageantry of Purim, featuring delicious gourmet food, music, entertainment and fun! Celebrating the triumph of good over evil and the survival of the Jewish people in the face of destruction, the story of Purim exemplifies the shared experience of ethnic discrimination, when nearly 2,600 years ago in Shusan, Persia, the King’s advisor, Haman, developed an evil plot to get rid the Jewish people. Courageously, Queen Esther spoke out on behalf of her fellow Jews to save them from annihilation. In Florida, the tradition of festive events in honor of Purim began in Jacksonville in 1880, followed by Pensacola, Tallahassee and Key West. The Jewish Museum of Florida established the tradition of our own signature event with our inaugural Ball in 2000. Daughter of the King: Growing Up in Gangland Author presentation by Sandra Lansky Sunday, March 30, 2014, 2:00-4:00PM A wild child of the late 50s and 60s, Sandi Lansky partied until dawn at El Morocco and The Stork Club, gallivanting with Dean Martin, one of her many celebrity beaus. Glitz and glamour were there from the start: Sandi was raised in upper class Jewish splendor in New York City and traveled with her father to Havana and Las Vegas. Bugsy Siegel and Lucky Luciano were family. Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby were friends with Meyer, and with Sandi as well. Sandi’s life, however, was not without heartbreak and tragedy. Her brother was cripplingly handicapped and she witnessed firsthand her mother’s downward spiral and struggle with mental illness. There was also the pain and confusion that came with being constantly followed by the FBI, seeing the deaths of her beloved “Uncles” turned into headlines, and watching the government tirelessly hunt her father down. Free and open to the public. RSVP: firstname.lastname@example.org or 786-972-3175.
Film Screening- Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust Sunday, March 30, 2014, 5:00-7:00PM Imaginary Witness is a 2004 documentary film directed by Daniel Anker and narrated by Gene Hackman that examines the treatment of the Holocaust in Hollywood films over a period of sixty years and the impact of the films on public perception and thinking, and vice versa. It includes scenes from over forty films and newsreels, and interviews with leading scholars, filmmakers, and Holocaust witnesses, to show how films portrayed Holocaust events, reflected public sentiment, or helped to shape it. It explores "the question of how an industry that sells fantasy has dealt with one of the most horrifying episodes in modern world history, but also how the movies themselves reflect America's ever-evolving relationship to the events of that era. Among the many films excerpted for the documentary are The Mortal Storm, The Great Dictator, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Schindler's List. Co-sponsored by the Galbut Family Miami Beach JCC on the Simkins Family Campus. $5 Admission; Free for Members of JMOF-FIU and JCC. RSVP: email@example.com or 786-972-3175.

For perhaps 2000 years, a small colony of Jews in Cochin, South India, enjoyed security and prosperity, fully accepted by their Hindu, Muslim, and Christian neighbors in this most exotic corner of the Diaspora, Jews flourished; yet, when their two homelands attained independence from the British- India in 1947 and Israel in 1948- virtually all made Aliyah to Israel. Learn their story from Professor Nathan Katz, arguably the preeminent scholar in Indian Jewry.
