2014/2015 MAR-JCC Meet the Author Jewish Book Series

Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus

2015-04-20, 7 PM to 9 PM

The MAR-JCC 2014/2015 Meet the Author Jewish Book Series presents Susan Jane Gilman, author of The Ice cream Queen of Orchard Street, the story of Malka Treynovsky who flees Russia with her family. Bedazzled by tales of gold and movie stardom, she tricks them into buying tickets for America. Yet no sooner do they land on the squalid Lower East Side of Manhattan, than Malka is crippled and abandoned in the street. Taken in by a tough-loving Italian ices peddler, she manages to survive through cunning and inventiveness. As she learns the secrets of his trade, she begins to shape her own destiny. She falls in love with a gorgeous, illiterate radical named Albert, and they set off across America in an ice cream truck. Slowly, she transforms herself into Lillian Dunkle, "The Ice Cream Queen" -- doyenne of an empire of ice cream franchises and a celebrated television personality. Susan Jane Gilman’s new novel, “The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street,” debuted in June 2014. She is also the bestselling author of three nonfiction books “Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress,” “Undress me in the Temple of Heaven,” and “Kiss My Tiara” and provides occasional commentary for NPR. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan, and has written for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and Ms. magazine, among others. Her fiction and essays have received several literary awards. “WHEN I WAS LITTLE, I was so girlie and ambitious, I was practically a drag queen. I wanted to be everything at once: a prima ballerina, an actress, a model, a famous artist, a nurse, an Ice Capades dancer, and Batgirl. I spent inordinate amounts of time waltzing around our living room with a doily on my head, imagining in great detail my promenade down the runway as the new Miss America, during which time I would also happen to receive a Nobel Prize for coloring.” ― Susan Jane Gilman The free Series presented by the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in partnership with several partnering Sponsoring Organizations including Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus, Jewish Community Relations Council of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, North Dade Branch of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Temple Sinai, and WIZO. It is developed through the auspices of the Jewish Book Council. The Series features authors on national tour, whose recently published books are of interest to the Jewish community, as well as the general community.
