News From the Greater Miami Jewish Federation

Since the war in Ukraine began, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) has treated more than 20,000 refugees at its JDC NATAN medical clinic in Przemyśl, Poland, Ukraine’s busiest border crossing.

Last weekend, approximately 400 adults and children from Miami’s Jewish community volunteered with Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center (JVC) for our 14th Annual Everything but the Turkey.

Earlier this week, members of Miami’s Jewish community celebrated the Ethiopian-Israeli holiday of Sigd with a special program presented at the Miami Beach Jewish Community Center by Federation’s community shaliach (emissary), Yehuda Michael.

Greater Miami Jewish Federation Women’s Philanthropy is thrilled to announce we are back in person on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 for the signature Women’s Event. The event will feature guest speaker Noa Tishby, Israeli-American performing artist, producer, author, activist and Israel’s first-ever Special Envoy for Combating Antisemitism and Delegitimization of Israel, who will share the importance of being a strong advocate for Israel.

The next session of the Young Lion of Judah Program, offered through Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center (JVC) and the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, will run December 11-February 26 for students becoming B’nai Mitzvot before August 2023 and wishing to complete up to 10 hours of community service.

Chaya had always dreamed of living in Israel, and through Masa Israel Teaching Fellows (MITF), she was able to do exactly that, while working with children and helping them learn English. A program of Federation overseas partner The Jewish Agency for Israel that receives support from the Annual Greater Miami Federation/UJA Campaign, Masa is the leader in immersive international experiences in Israel for adults ages 18-30.

Reacting to forecasts of a bitter winter and extensive power outages in war-torn Ukraine, The Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) — including the Greater Miami Jewish Federation — are allocating $7 million in emergency relief funds to support 22,000 Ukrainian Jews.

Although the war has forced Ukrainian psychologist Lena Nureyeva from her Kharkiv home, she has not abandoned her career in trauma therapy. Now in Poland, she continues her work with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), a Federation overseas partner. Before the war, Nureyeva worked with young adults with disabilities through JDC.
