Highlights of Outcomes

In collaboration with numerous partners, the Jewish Community Relations Council works to educate, convene and mobilize the Jewish community in the pursuit of social justice; bring the Jewish community into consensus, which ensures a vibrant community able to take positions and advocate on key federal, state and local legislative issues; and act as an informational resource to member organizations, the Jewish and general communities, and Jewish organizations on college campuses.

While such work has resulted in many successful outcomes, the following are among the most recent:

Goal: Ongoing efforts with Miami-Dade municipalities to pass resolutions divesting pension funds from firms doing business with Iran or Sudan
Outcome: Resulted in such resolutions from the cities of Aventura, Miami, Miami Beach, Miami Gardens, South Miami and Sunny Isles Beach, and Miami Shores Village

Goals: Coalition efforts with Jewish and non-Jewish groups, and follow-through with key contacts and grassroots efforts with Miami-Dade County officials to restore 100% cuts in community-based organization funding
Outcome: 70% restoration of funding

Goals: Convener of agency meeting with State Representative David Rivera, follow-through with key contacts, coalition partners and grassroots efforts with State officials to restore Local Service Provider (LSP) funding and to re-write school prayer bill
Outcomes: Full funding of LSP programs in State legislature; acceptable compromise on school prayer bill

Goals: Ongoing relationship-building with local and State officials
Outcomes: Garnered support for corrected allocations process of Older American Act funds through Alliance for Aging; successfully facilitated shipment of medical supplies to Haiti

Goals: Homeland Security Grants
Outcome: Ability to convene agencies, support their efforts and serve as liaison with County officials resulted in applicants’ meeting new 2010 eligibility requirements; six applicants with whom JCRC worked in 2009 cycle received grants totaling over $400,000

The Miami-Dade Jewish Community Study is a once-a-decade study sponsored by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and conducted by the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University in partnership with NORC at the University of Chicago. For the first time in the history of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, two women assume the organization’s top leadership positions. Lily Serviansky will become Chair of the Board and Mojdeh Khaghan Danial will serve as General Campaign Chair, following their installation at Federation’s 86th Annual Meeting, on Thursday, May 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Jungle Island Ballroom.
