Miami Community to Celebrate Global Day of Jewish Learning Sunday, November 7

Posted on 11/05/2010 @ 01:34 PM

The Miami Jewish community will join more than 250 communities around the world on Sunday, November 7 for the Global Day of Jewish Learning. This historic event — comprising study, discussions and hands-on activities for people of all ages and backgrounds — coincides with Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz’s completion of the translation of the entire Talmud, Judaism’s supreme sourcebook of law, ethics, philosophy, customs and history. In celebration of this accomplishment — over 45 years in the making — more than 30 special events will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. across Miami-Dade County; countless others are being held in locations worldwide.

Miami’s Global Day efforts are coordinated by the Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education, in partnership with the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, the Rabbinical Association of Greater Miami, and Miami-area synagogues, congregational schools, Jewish day schools and Jewish Community Centers.

All events and programs — both local and worldwide — are dedicated to the collective study of the same volume of Talmud, tractate Ta’anit, which discusses the environment, God, leadership, love, miracles, prayer and social justice.

One of the day’s highlights will be the live telecast of the ceremony in Israel in which Rabbi Steinsaltz will complete the final volume of his translation and commentary. The telecast can be seen live from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. at many locations across Miami-Dade County. In addition to a full modern Hebrew rendering, Steinsaltz has translated parts of the Talmud into English, Spanish, French and Russian.
