‘Party Politics’ Forum to Focus on the Facts in Advance of Election Day

Posted on 10/22/2010 @ 12:34 PM

An upcoming event presented by the Young Leadership Division and the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) — both entities of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation — will aim to inform and empower voters as they head to the polls.

“Party Politics: An Elections Forum” will be held on Wednesday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m. with featured speakers Florida State Reps. Adam Hasner (R-Dist. 87) and Richard Steinberg (D-Dist. 106).

Acting as their parties’ surrogates, Hasner and Steinberg will discuss issues-based priorities, and will focus on topics impacting the Jewish community, as well as the upcoming legislative session and elections outlook. Moderated by CBS4 News I-Team Investigative Reporter Stephen Stock, the Forum will be held at a private residence in Miami Beach. The address will be provided upon registration.

JCRC Chair Regina F. Zelonker cited JCRC’s mission to “Educate, Engage and Act,” noting that being informed of the issues is crucial.

Zelonker said that because of the political rhetoric leading up to this election, “we have an even more important responsibility to learn the facts and not just go on superficial headlines. We always have that obligation, but now it’s even more important.”

The panelists will take questions submitted by the audience beforehand, and the topics will cover county, state and federal matters. Attendees will also be briefed on several ballot initiatives to be voted on in this election cycle, including legislative redistricting, campaign finance reform and a revision of class-size requirements in Florida.

“There will be a lot of excitement in the air about the election," said Event Chair Elana Dykan, JCRC’s representative for the Young Leadership Division. “This Forum will give people a chance to ask questions about topics that interest them, including those that are specifically geared toward young professionals in the Jewish community.”

The Young Leadership Division is the under-40 division of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, and the JCRC is the advocacy and social action arm of Federation.
