Greater Miami Jewish Federation Missions to Israel in the Aftermath of October 7, 2023

When our community learned of Hamas’ horrific terrorist attacks in Israel on October 7, people across Miami immediately expressed the desire to travel to Israel to show support for those impacted and those working to provide vital assistance for them. In response, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation began organizing and leading a series of Israel Solidarity Missions, bringing groups of different ages and backgrounds to see firsthand the devastation perpetrated by Hamas, to meet one-on-one with survivors and their families and to hear how our community dollars are helping Israelis in the aftermath of October 7. The following stories, written immediately after each Solidarity Mission, provide accounts of each trip in the order in which they took place.

A group of nine leaders from the Greater Miami Jewish Federation recently traveled to Israel to be present for the one-year anniversary of the October 7 terrorist attacks. For the majority of participants, this was their first trip to Israel since October 7 and offered the opportunity to witness the real-time resilience of Israeli society and the true nature of the work that lies ahead.

Pain. Fortitude. Resilience. Participants in the Greater Miami Jewish Federation’s eighth and most recent Solidarity Mission to Israel returned time and again to these themes as they visited with Israelis during the week of Yom Ha’Zikaron (Memorial Day) and Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Independence Day). As the group of 12 crisscrossed the country, volunteering at farms and army bases and meeting with soldiers injured in Gaza, it immediately became clear that, “Everyone is hurting in one way or another, yet their resolve to move forward is palpable,” said Sidney Pertnoy, Mission Co-Chair and Chair of The Foundation of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
