The Foundation PAC Lunch & Learn Speakers

Steven D. Brooks, J.D. is the Senior Fiduciary Officer for BNY Mellon’s Miami and Boca Raton offices and lectures nationally on issues relating to asset management and planning. He has substantial experience managing assets for affluent families, including estates, trusts, private foundations and public charities. An active member of the South Florida Jewish community, Brooks has served on the boards of numerous organizations including Temple Judea, the Miami-Dade County Planned Giving Council, the Foundation of Jewish Philanthropies (now The Foundation of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation) and the American Technion Society. Prior to working in South Florida, Brooks served as a Special Agent with the Criminal Division of the IRS and practiced law in Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Dickinson College and graduated from Widener University School of Law.

Jerome M. Hesch, Esq. is a Tax and Estate Planning Consultant for Carlton Fields, one of Florida’s largest full-service law firms. He has extensive experience consulting on issues relating to tax and estate planning, as well as insurance, financial derivatives and energy tax credits. A member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), Hesch has authored numerous publications, including several tax management portfolios and a law school casebook on federal income taxation. He spent nearly 20 years as a professor at the University of Miami School of Law and Albany Law School, was an adjunct law professor at Florida International University and St. Thomas University, and worked at the Office of Chief Counsel for the IRS in Washington, D.C. Hesch earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in business from the University of Michigan, and graduated from the University at Buffalo Law School.

Barry A. Nelson, Esq. is a Florida Bar Board-certified tax, wills, trusts and estates attorney at the law firm of Nelson & Nelson, P.A. in Miami Beach, and is the former Mayor of Golden Beach. He provides counsel to individuals and families on issues relating to income, estate and gift tax planning, and assists physicians and business owners in tax, estate and asset protection planning. Nelson is a Fellow of American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), acting as Chairman of its Asset Protection Committee. He has served as an adjunct professor in the University of Miami Law School’s Taxation program and the Graduate Department of Accounting. As a father of a child with autism, Nelson utilizes his legal knowledge to advocate and prepare trusts for those with special needs, and is the Co-Founder of the Victory Center for Autism and Behavioral Challenges. Nelson received a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton and graduated from University of Miami School of Law.
