Keeping a Roof Over Her Head

“SARA,” A 68-YEAR-OLD WOMAN FROM MIAMI, IS A HEART-ATTACK SURVIVOR WHO SUFFERS FROM TYPE-2 DIABETES AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.

She used to get by with the income from an hourly-wage cashier’s job at a local restaurant, but was laid off during the COVID-19 shutdown. Sara is behind on her rent and her landlord is threatening to shut off her utilities unless she makes an immediate payment on her meager one-bedroom apartment.

Despite her scrimping on purchases of food and other necessities, Sara’s bank account is dwindling. She has forgone her medications to save money, risking her fragile health, and has nowhere to turn for help.
