Start-Up Nation Author Dan Senor to Deliver Keynote Speech at The Main Event

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation 2011 Main Event will be held on Thursday, February 24, and more than 1,200 members of Miami’s Jewish community are expected to turn out for this exciting and meaningful occasion. The event will feature a keynote address by Dan Senor, co-author of the New York Times bestseller, Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle.

In his book, Senor addresses how Israel — a country of 7.1 million people, only 60 years old, surrounded by enemies, in a constant state of war since its founding and with no natural resources — produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful and stable nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada and the United Kingdom.

An expert on Israeli-Palestinian relations, Middle East geopolitics, security and economics, Senor is Adjunct Senior Fellow for Middle East Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. He has been integral in policymaking, politics and business in the Middle East, and was one of the longest-serving civilian officials in Iraq, where he was Senior Adviser and Chief Spokesperson for the U.S.-led Coalition in 2003 and 2004. He was awarded the highest civilian honor by the Pentagon for his service.

Senor also served as Pentagon Adviser to Central Command in Qatar and Foreign Policy and Communications Adviser in the U.S. Senate. He has studied in Israel, completed his MBA at Harvard Business School and has traveled extensively throughout the Arab world. In his business career, he has invested in a number of Israeli and American start-ups, and today is with a New York-based global investment fund. Senor’s analytical pieces are frequently published by The Wall Street Journal; he has also written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Weekly Standard and TIME.

The Main Event will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Miami Downtown, 1601 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami.

Another highlight of The Main Event each year is the presentation of the Friend of Israel Humanitarian Award. This year, Federation will honor Stephen and Sandra Muss, prominent philanthropists and leaders in Miami’s Jewish community. The Musses are pillars of the Annual Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Campaign, demonstrating profound support for Israel and the Jewish people.

The evening will culminate with an electrifying performance by Tararam. Through captivating performances incorporating rhythm, drums, dance, lights, music and more, Tararam has made its way into the heart of Israeli culture and thrilled crowds around the globe by offering audiences a multi-sensory experience like no other.

The 2011 Chairs of The Main Event are Janet and Richard Yulman.

Couvert for the event is $90 per person (not tax-deductible). A minimum gift of $1,000 per person to the 2011 Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Campaign is suggested. Members of the community under age 30 are invited to attend with a suggested minimum gift of $365 to the 2011 Federation/UJA Campaign. Click here to RSVP.
