Description

This special anniversary event will feature a guest lecture by Professor Deborah E. Lipstadt, one of the nation's foremost experts on Holocaust denial and modern antisemitism. Lipstadt's many acclaimed books include History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier (2006), an account of how she was sued for libel by David Irving, a UK Holocaust denier. Lipstadt's victory in this seminal court case is regarded as having "done for the new century what the Nuremberg tribunals or the Eichmann trial did for earlier generations." The book was turned into a screenplay Denial by David Hare. The movie, starring Rachel Weisz and Tom Wilkenson, was nominated for a BAFTA award. Lipstadt's latest book, Antisemitism Here and Now, which won the 2019 National Jewish Book Award, casts light on the contemporary resurgence of antisemitism.

Professor Norman JW Goda, the Norman and Irma Braman Professor of Holocaust Studies and Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Florida will respond to Professor Lipstadt's talk and moderate a question and answer session. Goda specializes in the history of the Holocaust, war crimes trials, and twentieth-century diplomacy. He has authored and co-authored over eight highly regarded books, including his most recent work, The Holocaust: Europe, the World, and the Jews (2013).

The lecture and Q&A will be followed by “Forty Years of the Price Library of Judaica,” a slideshow presented by Rebecca JW Jefferson, the Curator of the Price Library. The slideshow will include the history of the collection and its treasures together with audio and video clips sharing memories of the past forty years from the Price family, library patrons, and supporters.
