Dr. Ofer Merin

Dr. Ofer Merin is a cardiac surgeon at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, in Jerusalem, Israel. Dr. Merin graduated from Hebrew University in 1991 and subsequently began his residency in cardiac surgery. He then completed a fellowship in adult cardiac surgery at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, Canada.

Upon returning to Israel, Dr. Merin joined Shaare Zedek as a Staff Surgeon. Over the years, he has served as Director of the Trauma Unit, Deputy Director General and most recently, Director-General of the Center.

He is a Colonel in the Israel Defense Forces and served in the reserve forces in various positions, including Medical Battalion Commander. Currently, he is a Military Field Hospital Director in the reserve forces, where he has gained vast experience in mass casualty events. As Shaare Zedek Medical Director, he has guided Israel’s international humanitarian efforts in response to natural disasters in Haiti, Japan, the Philippines and Nepal. He is currently helping care for Syrians injured during the civil war.

Dr. Merin is a Professor of Surgery at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and has been consistently voted Outstanding Lecturer by medical students throughout the past 10 years. In 2009, he received the faculty prize for Outstanding Lecturer.

Dr. Merin lives near Jerusalem with his wife Ora; they are parents to four children.
