JCRC Lecture on U.S. Foreign Policy and the Middle East Set for February 28

How will the daily breaking news in Egypt, the role of Hezbollah in the recent fall of Lebanon’s government, and the precarious balance of power in other Middle Eastern countries affect Israel, the United States and U.S.-Israel relations?

The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and the Middle East Society of Florida International University will seek answers to this question and others on Monday, February 28 during a program on U.S. Foreign Policy and the Middle East. The keynote speaker is Mara Karlin of the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University.

Prior to her position at SAIS, Karlin was the Levant Director and Special Assistant to the U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, where she was involved in formulating U.S. policy on Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel-Palestinian affairs. She helped build the Lebanese Armed Forces and coordinate nascent defense relations between the U.S. and Lebanon.

The lecture, which is open to the public, will take place at 7:00 p.m. on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus, 3000 NE 151st Street, North Miami, in the Wolfe University Centre, Room 155.  Parking is free. Karlin will hold also career and graduate school briefing with students between 6:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.
