Commendation

The City of Miami, Florida Salutes Greater Miami Jewish Federation

On the occasion of the Commemoration of Black History Month 2014 at a City of Miami Commission Meeting, Thursday, the twenty-seventh of February during the 118th Year of the Incorporation of the City of Miami

On behalf of the Citizens of the City of Miami and in honor of the 2014 Observance of Black History, “Civil Rights in America,” local officials pay tribute to the important roles played by members of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, honoring their leadership in the mass mobilization efforts to bring an end to legal segregation in the United States. We are proud to honor the alliance of men and women who marched, toiled and bled, shoulder-to-shoulder, who sat in, stood up, and spoke out for equal treatment under the law, thus helping to raise the pillars of democracy in cities all over America, including Miami, and leading to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Whereas: The American Jewish Community in South Florida, representing the nation’s second largest Jewish community after New York, has been critical to the development of South Florida through a commitment to service, a mission vouchsafed by Rabbi Solomon Schiff, Rabbi Emeritus of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and an inspiring leader in interfaith relations who advocates working together as a caring community to combat our common adversaries of hatred, bigotry, intolerance, indifference and ignorance.

Now, Therefore: I, Tomas Regalado, Mayor of the City of Miami, joined by Vice Chair Keon Hardemon and Commissioner Marc D. Sarnoff, acknowledge, through this public encomium, the stellar accomplishments of Greater Miami Jewish Federation and honor the richness and sacrifices of the example of their struggles for the fruits of democracy.
