Get Connected in Many Ways on Super Sunday

In today’s highly connected world, the telephone is merely one means for communication – and fundraising. And while nothing will ever replace a personal phone conversation, Federation leadership also understands the tremendous opportunities available through social media, online donation forms and “personal fundraising pages,” and is, for the first time, incorporating these exciting outreach vehicles into Super Sunday on March 27.

Traditionally known as the Miami Jewish community’s largest annual phonathon, Super Sunday this year will take things to the next level technologically. Under the leadership of Super Sunday Chair Lisa Kudish, Federation is adding a variety of social networking tools to be sure the important fundraising message gets out to as many people as possible, both before Super Sunday and on the day itself. Kudish has even recruited two Vice Chairs — Austin Cohen and Rochelle Broder-Singer — to head up the “personal fundraising” effort.

Anyone who has ever supported a friend in a fundraising walkathon will be familiar with the concept of personal fundraising. An individual or family creates a special page on a website (in this case, JewishMiami.org), sets a fundraising goal, and then contacts friends to help meet that goal.

In addition to the innovation of online communications, Super Sunday will provide the opportunity for volunteers to get involved in the mitzvah of tzedakah from any one of three locations: Greater Miami Jewish Federation Stanley C. Myers Building, 4200 Biscayne Blvd, Miami; the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center on the Sanford L. Ziff Campus, 18900 NE 25 Ave, North Miami Beach; and University of Miami Hillel, 1100 Stanford Dr., Coral Gables. Fundraising at Federation will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., while volunteers will gather from 5 to 9 p.m. at the JCC and Hillel locations.

Meanwhile in Israel, residents of Miami’s partner city of Yerucham, located in the Negev, plan to participate in the effort by making fundraising calls to people in Miami.

All of the money raised for Super Sunday will support the 2011 Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Campaign, which helps provide a vital lifeline of programs and services for Jewish people in need in Miami, in Israel and in 64 other countries around the world. Every donor makes a difference – no matter what age, no matter what amount given.

Volunteers can also raise money for the local Federation-funded agency, synagogue or day school of their choice by signing up for the Super Sunday incentive program. Their organization will receive 50 percent of every paid increase from donors who gave less than $1,000 last year. For example, if a donor gave $100 last year and increased his gift to $500 this year, Federation and the organization would share $400 after the donation is paid to Federation. As an extra incentive, the agency or organization with the most volunteer callers who sign up by Friday, March 25 and attend will receive an additional $1,000.

Another activity taking place on Super Sunday is participation in Torahs for Our Troops. This special project of the JWB Jewish Chaplains Council works to write small, portable Torahs that Jewish military chaplains can carry with them into the war theatre and from ship to ship for use by Jewish personnel serving in the U.S. Armed Forces overseas. JWB Jewish Chaplains Council is a service of JCC Association of North America. To learn more about this project, click here.

Super Sunday committee members include: Recruitment Vice Chair Amanda Adler, Training Vice Chair Sandy Liebowitz, Hospitality Vice Chairs Jonathan Kravitz and Amy Wildstein, Youth Vice Chairs Lisa Feldman and Judy Rosensweig Kapiloff, North Dade Evening Phonings Vice Chairs Alison and Rick Mars, and Member at Large H. Josh Rodstein.
