Community Security Conference and Workshop a Success!

Last week, 120 people, representing more than two dozen organizations, discussed security best practices at the first Community Security Conference and Workshop, presented by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation’s Office of Community Security and the Anti-Defamation League. A total of 14 law enforcement agencies were present, including local police departments, the FBI, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice. Spearheaded by Barry Gurland, Federation’s Community Security Committee Chairperson, and Brenda Moxley, Federation’s Community Security Director, the day included presentations, a question-and-answer panel led by law enforcement command staff, a seminar discussing lessons learned from the Sandy Hook school shooting and much more.

In his opening remarks at the conference, Federation President and CEO Jacob Solomon noted, “Thanks to our broad-based membership of Jewish organizations and agencies, we have the ability to convene, educate and advise the community around issues of mutual concern. This conference is an example of that commitment to empower individuals and organizations to change the culture of security. Through the education of community members, we aim to reduce vulnerabilities and establish close working relationships with law enforcement.”

In her role as Community Security Director, Moxley regularly spends time educating agencies and synagogues and providing consultation and guidance on security best practices, as well as serving as a liaison between Jewish institutions and law enforcement. Click here to read a recent Jewish Journal article in which she discussed the importance of working in concert with other agencies and law enforcement to assess the community’s needs, devise a strategic plan and share intelligence.
