Posted on 03/23/2016 @ 01:29 PM

Attorney Roberta Kaplan, who successfully argued before the United States Supreme Court for the repeal of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act), will be the next author featured at the MICHAEL-ANN RUSSELL JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER’S MEET THE AUTHOR JEWISH BOOK SERIES, on Tuesday, April 19, at 7:30pm, at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center, 18900 NE 25th Avenue, North Miami Beach. Kaplan will discuss her recently published autobiography/memoir,” THEN COMES MARRIAGE; United States v. Windsor and the Defeat of DOMA.”

In her book, Kaplan, a litigation partner at Paul Weis and described by some as a “litigation superstar,” describes her strategy and shares insights into the dramatic oral argument she made before the Supreme Court justices. She depicts the love story (of Edie Windsor and Thea Spyer) behind this watershed case, as well as her own difficult “coming-out” journey and relationship with her clients, family, and community.

Open to the public at no charge, the Series is a collaborative effort of the Michael-Ann Russell JCC with: Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus, Jewish Community Services of South Florida (the sponsoring organization for this author event), Mishkan Miami of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Temple Sinai of North Dade, and WIZO. The Series is dedicated to the memory of Sami and Charlotte Rohr a’h and is made possible “With the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.”

A book signing will take place at the conclusion of the program, books will be available for purchase, and complimentary refreshments will be served. For questions and further information, contact David Surowitz, Michael-Ann Russell JCC Assistant Executive Director and Meet the Author Series Coordinator, at 305-932-4200, ext. 127.
