Posted by Linda Schaffzin on 10/06/2011 @ 06:34 PM
Sarit Oren, criminologist and Lehrman mom, presented a riveted Lehrman Parent Association audience with statistics, warning signs/signals and most importantly, ways in which parents can educate children of all ages on how to handle “Stranger – Dangers and Bullying” at their monthly meeting. Sarit, a native of Canada, worked extensively in correctional facilities and half-way houses in a variety of positions including probation officer. She was an interview agent in a major Canadian government study on inmates and their experiences in and out of correctional facilities. Prevention became her central focus. “If we can get to the next generation before the media, the peer pressure, the aggressors, or the ‘family demons’…(we can) intercept early to make…real changes in how society…evolve(s). Sarit’s was truly an interactive presentation which no-one wanted to see come to an end.

The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation is offering video-based, mini-course featuring world-renowned experts on Israel and the Middle East. The free course is made available through a partnership between JCRC and Jerusalem Online University (JOU) that will enable Jewish individuals and organizations to benefit from JOU’s Israel educational resources.
The free course was created in response to discussions that were held in the aftermath of JCRC’s Community Summit — “Combating the Campaign to Delegitimize Israel” — in January 2011. The goal of the course is to create educated advocates on behalf of Israel in the Miami Jewish community.
The resources, available on DVDs for group showings year-round at no cost, include:
**A documentary film titled Crossing the Line that exposes efforts to delegitimize and demonize Israel, particularly on college campuses
**Short films and recorded lectures by prestigious educators and speakers, including:
o A State Is Born (covering Jewish historical ties to the land of Israel, the formation of the modern state and what happened in 1967)
o Israel Inside (a joint PBS project exploring the dynamic, entrepreneurial and benevolent spirit of Israelis)
o Israel and the West (examining the values Israel shares with the West and how Israel is portrayed by the media)
o Speaking About Israel (conveying the most important elements people need to be aware of when discussing/advocating for Israel)
**Facilitator discussion questions and materials for each mini-course film and recorded lecture
**Graphics and marketing materials
In addition, free online access to Jerusalem Online University’s website — www.JerusalemOnlineUniversity.com — will make possible individual viewing of A State is Born, Israel and the West, and Speaking About Israel.
Upon request, the JCRC will provide a sub-licensing agreement that will grant an organization access to the JOU resources.
For more information, contact JCRC Director Carol Brick-Turin at CommunityRelations@JewishMiami.org or 786-866-8485.
