Join us for the second event in the series Filling Narrative Gaps: The Stories of Refuseniks in South Florida. Soviet Jewish immigrants who landed in South Florida in the 1980s are known as “refuseniks” because the Soviet government refused their exit visas. After applying to emigrate, these Soviet Jews were jailed and tortured, lost their jobs and were thrown out of their homes. This population reflects a forgotten chapter in the history of South Florida as a haven for the oppressed. It is a story that must be told and remembered.
This second event in the refusenik series features “The Narratives and the Generations.” It presents the testimony of refuseniks Anatoly and Bronya Glazer, authors of a book about their experience, and their daughter Maya Cramer.
Please come to learn or to share your story so that this history is not lost. Former refuseniks and their children are invited to tell their stories or to listen so that the future will not forget.

This final event in the refusenik series features the history of this movement as told by Benjamin Nathans and the activists Adele and Joel Sandberg, who helped organize the movement that finally allowed refuseniks to leave the Soviet Union.

Exhibition of 15 books by Adele Sandberg recounting the experiences of Soviet Jews when they became refuseniks.
Distinguished Speakers
· Benjamin Nathans, Benjamin Nathans, Alan Charles Kors Associate Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania. His current book project is entitled To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: The Many Lives of the Soviet Dissident Movement.
· Adele and Joel Sandberg, leaders in the movement to free refuseniks. They helped to organize the movement leading to the passage of the 1974 Jackson-Vanick amendment that resulted in the release of 50,000 Jews from the USSR. Joel Sandberg served as a President of the SFCSJ and vice President of the Union of Councils for Soviet Jews.

Join the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU and O, Miami for a storytelling workshop led by Iraq War vet, performance artist, and clinical therapist Anthony Torres. Torres will share how his personal and professional experiences re-ignited his passion for writing and ultimately led to his current role as writer, performer, and Executive Director of Combat Hippies – an all-military veteran theater company based in Miami, Florida.
Anthony Torres is a licensed clinical social worker and combat veteran with over sixteen years of experience in the fields of trauma and mental health recovery. He served three years in the Army Reserve as a Civil Affairs Specialist followed by a four-year enlistment on active duty as a mental health specialist. This included a twelve-month combat tour to Abu Ghraib Prison, Iraq where he provided counseling to deployed troops. Following an honorable discharge, he relocated to South Florida to attend college. He currently works as a readjustment counselor at the Pompano Beach Vet Center. He holds an MS in Psychology from Albizu University and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Barry University. Anthony is also a co-founder and Executive Director of Combat Hippies, an ensemble of Puerto Rican military veteran performing artists based in Miami, Florida.

PJ Library is FINALLY back at the Miami Children’s Museum for a special OUTDOOR Chanukah celebration! Join Nicole Berkin, Melissa Goldfarb, Caryn Shapiro-Pardo and Rachel Silver, Program Co-Chairs, on Sunday, November 21 at 11 AM for story time and a Chanukah-themed play dough experience with SMOCKED ART! We’ll use tools and loose parts such as dreidels, gold coins and candles to promote open-ended play and creativity. Children will then be able to take home their dough to continue the fun for all 8 nights of Chanukah!
