Scheck Hillel’s New Athletic Complex Built to Strengthen Community

Scheck Hillel Community School stands tall on 14 acres in the heart of one of the fastest growing Jewish communities in the country. According to the 2014 Greater Miami Jewish Federation Population Study, Miami’s Jewish population has increased by 9 percent during the past decade. Scheck Hillel is energized by this vibrant growth and takes seriously its responsibility to foster a Jewish environment for our children in which education is contemporary, relevant and inspiring.

Demonstrating its commitment to students and community, Scheck Hillel is investing in Momentum, a campus expansion of state-of-the-art facilities. Part of the first phase opened when school history was made hosting Homecoming 2014 on October 22. The regulation-size field on which one of the country’s only Jewish varsity football teams played is one piece of Scheck Hillel’s 30,000-square foot Athletic Complex that also showcases a complete gymnasium, fitness center, concession and spirit space. The excitement surrounding this momentous occasion was palpable, as nearly 800 students, families, alumni, community leaders and rabbis, and local and national media ignored the falling rain to fill bleachers and sidelines to participate in a community shehecheyanu and cheer on the Lions.

Like its neighboring Michael-Ann Russell JCC, Scheck Hillel’s Athletic Complex will provide more than just a home to sports. Equipped with high-tech digital media, this will be a place where community will gather and experience recreation while building shared spirit on this expanded North Dade campus of Jewish life.

"We gather in this first phase of our expanded home,” said Scheck Hillel's Head of School Dr. Ezra Levy, as he addressed the packed crowd from the 50-yard line Wednesday night, “representing the strength of Scheck Hillel: a school that has taught our children for more than 40 years and will continue to do so for generations to come."

The second part of the expansion’s first phase is the Eduplex of cutting edge classrooms, technologies, laboratories and media center for Grades 6-12 with a Beit Midrash at the center of it all. This 70,000 square-foot building will serve as a center of learning for all ages, enriching North Dade with college preparatory academics, Jewish life and community events, and adult education. Eduplex fundraising is underway, and site work already began with Athletic Complex construction.

Community is central to Scheck Hillel’s expansion. Assuring the future of North Dade as a vibrant center of Jewish community comes from strengthening educational resources for generations of today and tomorrow and giving children opportunities and places to develop as global citizens with Jewish identity, and values that will endure.
