Professor Deborah Lipstadt
DR. DEBORAH LIPSTADT, Professor of Holocaust Studies at Emory University, is widely known for the libel lawsuit brought against her by a Holocaust denier in 1996. The resulting lengthy trial created a call to action for Jews around the world. The movie, Denial, based on her book, History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier, starring Rachel Weisz, tells the story of this seminal legal battle. The Jewish community rallied around Professor Lipstadt as she defended the memory of all those who were murdered in the Holocaust and the history and experiences of the Jewish people. News headlines declared, “History has had its day in court and scored a crushing victory.”
For nearly 40 years, Professor Lipstadt has devoted herself to publishing and teaching about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism. She has served as a historical consultant to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and has held presidential appointments to the US Holocaust Memorial Council. A distinguished author, her books include Holocaust: An American Understanding, The Eichmann Trial, Beyond Belief: The American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust and most recently, Antisemitism: Here And Now.
For her lifelong dedication to fighting anti-Semitism and for her commitment to preserving the true history and lessons of the Holocaust for the sake of the Jewish people and for the benefit of all humanity, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation proudly honors Professor Deborah Lipstadt with the 2020 Friend of Israel Humanitarian Award.
