A Successful Super Sunday!

Hundreds of volunteers gathered to make a difference in the lives of others today, as the Greater Miami Jewish Federation presented its annual Super Sunday/Good Deeds Day event at the Stanley C. Myers Building, 4200 Biscayne Boulevard.

Super Sunday is Federation’s largest and longest-running annual community-fundraising day. Volunteers of all ages made thousands of telephone calls to Jewish households across Miami-Dade County, asking for donations to the Annual Federation/UJA Campaign. These funds will support a network of social-service, humanitarian and educational programs serving people in need in Miami, in Israel and in more than 70 other countries worldwide.

Good Deeds Day in recent years has become an integral component of the event, enabling volunteers to put into practice the simple idea that every single person can do something good – large or small – to improve lives and positively change the world. Started in Israel in 2007 with 7,000 volunteers, Good Deeds Day was initiated by American-Israeli businesswoman and philanthropist Shari Arison, and has since included hundreds of thousands of volunteers in 50 countries.

For Miami’s part in this year’s Good Deeds Day, Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center coordinated projects that focused on others in the community. Starting at 10 a.m., participants joined in projects such as: assembling mason jar meals for needy seniors, filling purses with hygiene items for Camillus House residents, and loading up buckets of cleaning supplies for Jewish Community Services Kosher Food Bank clients. Volunteers also created blankets for wheelchair-bound patients of the Seasons Hospice and put together “baskets of fun” for children of the Miami Rescue Mission. Additionally, the day featured activities for children, a blood drive and more.

This year’s Super Sunday event was chaired by Gaby and Joel Birnbaum. Tobi Ash is Chair of Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center, which coordinated the day’s Good Deeds Day activities.
