World ORT Kadima Mada Provides Path for Young Jews in Ethiopia

Israel-based World ORT Kadima Mada (WOKM) has launched an initiative to equip young Jews in Ethiopia with training in hi-tech and other skilled industries in preparation for their aliyah (immigration) to Israel. The program is offered through Federation overseas partner World ORT’s International Cooperation Department, in conjunction with Struggle to Save Ethiopian Jewry (SSEJ) and with the support of the Buchner Foundation. Instruction began in January in the town of Gondar for 300 Jewish students, ages 14-21, who are learning to write resumes, prepare for job interviews, hone communication skills and explore innovation and entrepreneurship. “The SSEJ Learning Center is full of young men and women eager to move to Israel and celebrate their Judaism,” said Dr. Moshe Leiba, WOKM Deputy Director General. “For those who are able to make aliyah to Israel, [this training] will make all the difference in their ability to acclimate and succeed in Israel’s hi-tech economy.” Approximately 14,000 Jews in Ethiopia live below the international poverty line of one dollar per day. More than 70% have parents, spouses, children or siblings living in Israel.
