Event Details

Description

Inaugurating and introducing the Lev of Legends Oneg Shabbat series will be Marcia Jo Zerivitz (pictured above), founding executive director of the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU and author of the encyclopedic “Jews of Florida, Centuries of Stories.”

Following Shabbat services on Friday, October 29th, Marcia, the initiator of Florida’s Jewish History Month, (which was) the first state to dedicate a month to the contributions of its Jewish community, will kick off the Lev of Legends series with a “Lens on the Temple Israel Legend.” The Powerpoint program will detail our beginnings in 1922 set in context of South Florida’s Jewish history. The program will be sponsored by TI
second-generation past presidents Norma and Michael Orovitz.

The word for heart in Hebrew is Lev. In this series of events, meet or rediscover the actual people - the pioneers who took the simple but powerful idea of an inclusive house of prayer and nurtured it and developed it, creating what would become the greatest Reform congregation in the South. Each month, we will introduce another hero or heroine, without whom Temple Israel could not have survived or thrived. Stay tuned for details on upcoming 'Lev of Legends' events.
