Moishe House Has a New Home for Young Jewish Adults in Aventura

Moishe House International has opened a second home in Miami, aiming to connect the flourishing Jewish young adult population in North Dade. Thanks to the generous long-term support of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and the Emanuel J. Friedman Philanthropies, Moishe House Miami-Aventura will provide local, accessible programs for Jewish young adults and continue to serve as a vibrant center of Jewish life.

“I hope Moishe House-Aventura feels like a second home to the community,” said Moishe House Miami-Aventura resident Michael Levy. “And they feel welcome to come hang out any day of the week.”

Back in 2011, Miami’s first Moishe House in Brickell opened its doors to young adults throughout the Jewish community. Since its inception, Moishe House Miami-Downtown filled a void for many young Jews by hosting 236 programs and engaging more than 3,000 in total attendance in quality Jewish programming.

“I would like to keep in line with what my predecessors had when they started this place, where young Jewish professionals from around the area could come for a deeper sense of community,” said Moishe House Miami-Downtown resident Justin Spivak. “This connection could be accomplished through outreach or simply a Friday night dinner.”

Since its opening in December 2014, Moishe House Miami-Aventura has become a go-to spot in the Miami area. This year, the residents will host some 60 programs (Jewish holidays and culture, Jewish learning, repairing the world and social events), and will engage a minimum of 1,000 in total attendance with at least 250 first-timers. Lastly, they will collaborate and partner with other Jewish organizations for at least 20 percent of all programs.

The Moishe House set-up is simple: three to five young Jews (typically young professionals or graduate students) live together in a home, are provided with a rent subsidy, a Jewish library and a programming budget in exchange for hosting at least 60 programs. Both Miami-area Moishe Houses will serve as a hub for young adults to become part of a stronger, more vibrant Jewish community.
