Temple Judea Holds Community Healing Service August 28
Posted by Mary Ann Deaktor on 08/07/2018 @ 02:19 PM
Temple Judea, one of Miami’s largest Reform synagogues, is holding its popular Healing Service, part of its Caring Community efforts, on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at 7pm at Temple Judea, 5500 Granada Blvd., Coral Gables. The event is free and open to Temple Judea members and the entire community. For more information, contact Jodi Rozental at email: [email protected] or call 305-667-5657 x 2114.
“We are happy to announce that Gospel Vocalist Antonia Wilson, Artistic Director of Legato Vocal Ensemble, will perform with us on August 28,” said Jodi Rozental, Temple Judea’s Cantorial Soloist. “Our diverse group is committed to the power of healing through music and a unanimous belief in supporting others through all phases of their life journeys.”
People seek out both emotional and physical healing at different times in their lives for a variety of reasons. This could be related to an illness, loss of a loved one, caregiver fatigue, major life transitions or societal fears and concerns faced daily. Organized and led by Jodi Rozental, the Healing Service includes spiritual and secular songs, prayers, and inspirational readings, all performed by a rotation of talented singers and instrumentalists from various schools and organizations in Miami. These culturally diverse performers range in age and come from New World School of the Arts, University of Miami School of Music, Miami Children’s Theatre Choir, Florida Grand Opera and Temple Judea’s Choir. Held quarterly on Tuesdays at 7pm, the next Healing Service will be November 27, 2018.
Now celebrating 70 years of Jewish Learning and Living in Coral Gables, Temple Judea is one of the largest Reform synagogues in Miami with approximately 600 member families. Temple Judea's mission is to enrich members’ ever-more complicated lives with the new insights of ancient Jewish heritage. For more information, visit www.JudeaGables.org.
Request for Proposals: Greater Miami Jewish Federation Women's Impact Initiative
Posted by Liat Stilman on 08/07/2018 @ 11:18 AM
Announcement: Women’s Impact Initiative Request for Proposals
The Greater Miami Jewish Federation is pleased to announce the fourth year of the Women’s Impact Initiative providing grants from the Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Annual Campaign to non-profit organizations in Miami that inspire and empower Jewish women and girls, as well as improve our local community through programs that achieve social, economic, religious and political equality.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants include nonprofits with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status (or fiscal sponsorship) that serve the Jewish community in Miami-Dade County. While we will give preference to strengthening Jewish nonprofits and programs based in Greater Miami, we also encourage partnerships with those outside the Jewish community to bring high-quality programs to our community. Nonprofits that have current Federation grants must be in compliance with the terms of those awards to be considered.
Grant Amounts & Use: Grants will range from $5,000 to $20,000 and will be competitively awarded to support new programs or the expansion of existing programs advancing the mission of Federation’s Women’s Impact Initiative. Projects that will be considered for grants must be gender-specific and serve a majority Jewish population. The “gender lens” used must consist of a deep examination of how culturally entrenched gender norms affect women and girls and must take these distinctions into account when identifying both problems and solutions. The aim is to ensure that our local Jewish community is “gender aware” and that outcomes achieve social, economic, religious and political equality by being inclusive of and responsive to the needs and issues of Jewish women and girls.
Awards may be used to cover expenses directly related to implementing the cost of new programs or the expansion of existing programs, such as salaries of program staff, outreach, marketing, supplies, materials, events or local travel. Grants cannot be used for non-local travel, scholarships, or capital projects. Grants will not cover more than 75 percent of the total project cost.
Due Date: Applications are due by email to [email protected] by 4:00 PM on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Late applications will not be considered.
Grant notifications will be made by December 31, 2018.
Checklist—Please include the following documents in your submission:
□ Completed Grant Application
□ Organization’s current annual operating budget
□ Copy of IRS determination letter indicating 501(c)(3) status or proof of fiscal sponsorship
□ Most recent 990 form (or audit report if no 990 is available)
□ List of current Board of Directors
□ List of senior staff members
□ OPTIONAL: Please provide a link to a promotional video, highlighting your organization, if you have one.

B'nai Mitzvah Reimagined!
Posted by Jenifer Berse on 08/02/2018 @ 03:26 PM
Introducing BE MITZVAH! a Reimagined Bar/Bat Mitzvah
Rabbi Robyn Fisher of Beth Or created Be Mitzvah, a new, unique Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience that reimagines the traditional model of this important coming-of-age life cycle moment. Be Mitzvah shifts the students’ focus from prayer and chanting onto the learning of middot (Jewish character values) and the hands-on application of those values through Community service and social justice work. Completion of this program will inspire the participants to build a life of compassion, love and tikkun olam, the healing of the world around them.
Be Inspired. Be Compassionate. Be Socially Conscious. Be Jewish. What?
Be Mitzvah is a year-long Bar/Bat Mitzvah program for students going into the 7th grade. Each cohort will meet weekly, combining classroom work with monthly community, social-service work. The in-class curriculum will include a combination of Tikkun middot (provided by the Institute for Jewish Spirituality), social action study (provided by Repair the World), Hebrew language, and prayer. In addition to the weekly gatherings, there will be 3 special hands-on programs during the year in which the students will participate in fun, group-bonding activities revolving around Jewish rituals and holiday celebrations. The year will culminate in a creative, student-led group service and celebration, marking this milestone together with family and friends.
When?
Beginning September 23, 2018, the students will meet every Sunday from 9:30AM-12:30PM. One Sunday per month, the students will participate together in a year-long social action project under the auspices of Repair the World. And, there will be an additional 3 special-project gatherings during the year (date and time TBD).
Who?
Be Mitzvah is open to 7th graders who possess a real desire and discipline to participate in an intimate and intentional group initiative. No prior learning is necessary, although some rudimentary knowledge of Hebrew is helpful. Space is limited to those students who complete the application and can demonstrate a strong willingness and maturity to participate in this type of learning environment.
Cost?
There are no requirements of synagogue membership in Beth Or, although our Be Mitzvah families are always welcome to participate in all of our services and programs at no additional cost, including the High Holy Days. Participation in Be Mitzvah is $1800 and includes instruction, printed materials, transportation to the monthly social action project, hands-on programming materials, and a Be Mitzvah t-shirt. The end-of-the-year service and celebration will have an additional cost, subject to the group’s desires and abilities.
*There will be a $300 discount for any student who registers and pays in full before August 15th, 2018, pending acceptance into the program.
