The legacy of the Holocaust will be considered through cultural, scholarly and personal perspectives in a series of enlightening film presentations, lectures and community discussions during Holocaust Education Week, January 26-30, 2020, at various locations throughout Miami-Dade County. An exhibition-The Holocaust and the Anguish of Liberation—will be on display until April 26, 2020 at the Miami Beach Regional Library. Two sets of pictures are paired – a series of vintage black & white posters originally distributed by B’nai Brith depicting the stark timeline of the Holocaust juxtaposed with 13 prints of art created by Holocaust Survivor artists from 1945-1947, revealing the anguish of liberation and their search for solace.

Seventy-five years after the liberation of Auschwitz, the testimonial works of Primo Levi occupy a central role in the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust. Against the dangers of oblivion and within the maelstrom of technological innovation and the stream of superficial information of today’s world, Primo Levi’s writings offer us dense, precise, and thoughtful meditations on life, survival and the act of writing. This lecture aims to illuminate key aspects of the works of Primo Levi on the experience of Auschwitz and to celebrate his enduring testimony of the Catastrophe.

Nicola Gavioli, PhD, teaches in the Department of Modern Languages at Florida International University, Miami (FL). Among his research focuses is witness literature.

Students spend the morning with two Holocaust Survivor’s, Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff and Laszlo Selly, volunteers at the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach who will share their first –hand experiences. Through meaningful conversation with the survivors, students will get insight into the World War II years and how these survivors forged new lives in a new country.

On a cold winter day a month after the Battle of the Bulge, Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds ordered all 1200 American POW’s to fall out and told the Nazi Officer “We are all Jews here,” refusing to back down and saving the lives of the Jewish soldiers under his command. His son, Chris Edmonds will speak about lessons from his father and how the story was discovered more than 40 years after it occurred. Roddie Edmonds was posthumously recognized as Righteous Amongst the Nations by Yad Vashem, Israel. Chris Edmonds is Senior Pastor of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Marville, Tennessee and is the founder of the Roddie’s Code and the Roddie Edmonds Foundation, organizations dedicated to extending the legacy and lessons of his father for generations to come.

Martin Simmonds (Tim Roth) has been haunted throughout his life by the mysterious disappearance of his “brother” and extraordinary best friend, a Polish Jewish virtuoso violinist, Dovidl Rapaport, who vanished shortly before the 1951 London debut concert that would have launched his brilliant career. Thirty-five years later, Martin discovers that Dovidl (Clive Owen) may still be alive, and sets out on an obsessive intercontinental search to find him and learn why he left.

Almost four decades later, Martin follows the clues that lead him ever closer to his friend, until he learns the meaning of ‘The Song of Names,’ a profoundly moving piece of music that holds the answer to why his brother vanished so suddenly from his life.

Guests will experience The Hanukkah Factory’s unforgettable take on the holiday through interactive spaces inspired by traditional holiday symbols such as menorahs and dreidels (four-sided spinning tops), Hanukkah foods such as donuts and latkes (potato pancakes), and the history of the holiday and its hero, Judah the Maccabee. There is also an engaging Menorah Madness treasure hunt that will take guests throughout the entire venue.

The Hanukkah Factory experience will transport you to a place of imagination. With spaces designed to make holiday memories with family and friends, the eye-popping designs at The Hanukkah Factory also appeals to those looking for the perfect backdrops for holiday selfies and family photos. The Hanukkah Factory is the brainchild of Miami Rabbi Jonathan Tabachnikoff in association with the 305 Club.

North Miami Beach, Florida – Scheck Hillel Community School senior Orli Algranatti was recognized by the Heisman Trophy Trust as a 2019 Heisman High School Scholarship School Winner.

Orli plays three varsity sports for Scheck Hillel: tennis, volleyball and basketball. She is a leader who exemplifies the tenets of Scheck Hillel’s educational philosophy.

“When Coach Lyon sent me the nomination, my whole world turned upside down because I hadn't realized I was so involved,” Orli said. “I play so many sports, and I dedicated my whole life to sports and the school! I am very excited for this recognition.”

The 2020 senior also thrives academically. She participates in Scheck Hillel’s Dual Enrollment program with Florida International University, earning college credit while in high school. In 2017, she was honored by the Miami Herald for her academic achievement, community service and sports involvement. Through Scheck Hillel’s Experiential Learning Program, Orli interns at Skylake Animal Hospital, where she has immersed herself in the science and art of caring for animals. The aspiring veterinarian is looking to learn as much as possible about the field and develop mentoring relationships before college. Orli is also very active in the community. She volunteers at ACEing Autism, teaching kids with autism how to play tennis, and with Kesher, teaching students how to play basketball.

The prestigious Heisman High School Scholarship recognizes outstanding scholar-athletes who understand that the most important victories not only happen on the field, but in their schools and communities.
