Federation President & CEO to Retire After More Than Four Decades

Jacob Solomon, who joined the Greater Miami Jewish Federation in 1981, has announced his plans to retire, effective June 30, 2024. He has served as President & CEO since 1992, guiding the raising and distribution of hundreds of millions of dollars to support humanitarian services and Jewish educational programs in Miami, in Israel and in more than 70 other countries worldwide. “This is a poignant moment for our Jewish community,” said Federation Board Chair Ariel Bentata. “Throughout his tenure, Jacob has helped shape Miami’s remarkable Jewish landscape." PJ Library needs volunteer readers at Chanukah

Volunteer reading to children

PJ Library Story Squad is seeking volunteer readers to help bring Chanukah to Miami-Dade elementary school students. Share the joy of the Festival of Lights with children in their classrooms through story time and Chanukah traditions such as lighting the menorah, playing dreidel with Chanukah gelt (chocolate “money”) and eating sufganiyot (jelly donuts). The Miami chapter of PJ Library, a Federation program funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and the Blank Family Foundation, provides free Jewish books to thousands of children throughout Miami-Dade County to promote a love of reading while exploring Jewish values and traditions.

PJ Library Story Squad participants will be provided with all necessary materials as well as virtual training on Wednesday, November 15 and Thursday, November 16. Registration deadline is Monday, November 13.

Applications are being accepted for Mishkan Miami’s Refuat Ha-Nefesh, a unique volunteer experience providing training for Jews, ages 21 and older, in the art of Jewish spiritual care.

Participants in the course, which will be taught largely online, will receive instruction by rabbis and chaplains as well as doctors, bereavement specialists and social workers. Students will also complete a volunteer mitzvah (good deed) project geared toward helping older adults and others who are lonely, ill or require help or companionship. In addition to studying spiritual care texts, volunteers will learn to develop legacy, art, music and creative ritual projects and receive assistance in developing and maintaining congregational caring communities.

A program of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Mishkan Miami offers spiritual support throughout the Jewish community, providing consolation and guidance to those in need.

Refuat Ha-Nefesh training will take place December 17, 2023 -April 9, 2024. The course will be a combination of virtual Tuesday evening sessions and three in-person Sunday morning sessions.

The application deadline is November 17. Following your application, Mishkan Miami chaplains will schedule an informational interview, which precedes registration. For further information, contact Nicole Alonso at [email protected] or 786.866.8655.
