It's Happening In Miami

One year ago, you showed up for Shabbat.

Following the murder of 11 innocent Jews at prayer at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue last October, millions of people of all faiths rallied around AJC’s #ShowUpForShabbat initiative, packing synagogues in what became the largest-ever expression of solidarity with the American Jewish community.

On the one-year anniversary, AJC is again calling on all people of good conscience to #ShowUpForShabbat. Let us come together to honor the victims and raise our collective voice for a world free of antisemitism, hate, and bigotry.

A number of Miami-Dade congregations have already indicated their participation in #ShowUpForShabbat 2019, including Temple Judea, Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus, Temple Beth Sholom, Chabad of Downtown Coral Gables, and University of Miami Hillel. Please contact your synagogue directly for information about their #ShowUpForShabbat services. The High Holiday Season, when we consider the meaning and purpose of our lives, is the perfect time to remember those who had such an impact upon us. For this reason, it is a popular custom to visit cemeteries between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. This custom, called kever avot (literally, graves of our parents), is an opportunity to raise, remember and celebrate the souls of those who are no longer with us and reflect upon our own mortality and our role in this life. Join us as we come together in memory and prayer, and light a yahrtzeit candle for those who brought life and light into our lives.

Greater Miami Jewish Federation chaplains and local clergy will join us and be available to provide resources and support.

Sunday, November 3rd at 10:30 AM. Temple Emanu-El on Miami Beach will present Yoram Ettinger as its guest speaker. Ambassador Ettinger is an insider on US-Israel relations, mideast politics and overseas investments in Israel's high tech arena. He is a member of the American-Israel Demographic Research Group (AIDRG), which has documented dramatic flaws behind demographic fatalism on one hand and a Jewish demographic momentum on the other hand. He is a consultant to members of Israel’s Cabinet and Knesset, and regularly briefs US legislators and their staff on Israel’s contribution to vital US interests, on the root causes of international terrorism and on other issues of bilateral concern. Ambassador Ettinger's Op-Ed pieces have been published in Israel and in the US, and he has been interviewed on Israeli and American TV and radio. In addition, he was a speaker at the AIPAC Annual Conference. Ambassador Ettinger , who did his graduate studies at UCLA and undergraduate at UTEP,- served as Minister for Congressional Affairs at Israel's Embassy in Washington (with the rank of ambassador), as Israel's Consul General in Houston and as Director of Israel's Government Press Office. He is the editor of Straight From The Jerusalem Cloakroom and Boardroom, newsletters on issues of national security and overseas investments in Israel's high-tech.
