Online Event: From Inquisition to Genocide: The Untold Story of Sefarad & the Holocaust

Sunday, September 22, 1 - 2:30 PM

Event flyer

It's been 79 years since the end of the Holocaust, or Nazi Germany’s systematic and state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews. Traditional Holocaust awareness has long focused on Ashkenazi Jewry, or Jews in Central and Eastern Europe. By numbers, they bore the brunt of the genocide. Yet, Sefardic Jewry was also profoundly devastated. In a time of antisemitism unprecedented since the Shoah, join Jewish Heritage Alliance (JHA) for a meaningful overview of a largely unknown chapter in the annals of the Holocaust.

Presenter Dr. Isaac Amon, JHA Director of Academic Research and an attorney and counselor at law, often speaks on the law, international criminal justice and Jewish memory, including antisemitism, the Inquisition and the Holocaust.

New World Symphony: The Diary of Anne Frank

Saturday October 5 & Sunday, October 6

Stéphane Denève conducts Michael Tilson Thomas' From the Diary of Anne Frank.

Michael Tilson Thomas:

"The work is a melodrama in the form of symphonic variations. It was written for Audrey Hepburn. Audrey had grown up in occupied Holland; she was exactly the same age as Anne Frank and identified strongly with her. While some of the words concern tragic events, so many of them reflect the youthful, optimistic, inquisitive, and compassionate spirit of their author. Above all, we wanted these qualities to come through in the piece, and so I have derived the themes … from turns of phrases in traditional Jewish music, especially the hymn to life, Kaddish."
