THE U.S. AND THE HOLOCAUST is a three-part, six hour series directed by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein, that examines America’s response to one of the greatest humanitarian crises of the twentieth century. Americans consider themselves a “nation of immigrants,” but as the catastrophe of the Holocaust unfolded in Europe, the United States proved unwilling to open its doors to more than a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of desperate people seeking refuge. Through riveting firsthand testimony of witnesses and survivors who as children endured persecution, violence and flight as their families tried to escape Hitler, this series delves deeply into the tragic human consequences of public indifference, bureaucratic red tape and restrictive quota laws in America. Did the nation fail to live up to its ideals? This is a history to be reckoned with.

Watch the broadcast premiere of THE U.S. AND THE HOLOCAUST on WPBT & WXEL Sunday, September 18th starting at 8pm.

Roger Waters: Your Antisemitism and Hatred Are Not Welcome in Miami

This past Tuesday, Federation placed a full-page message in the Miami Herald addressing Pink Floyd co-founder and vocalist Roger Waters, who performed that evening in Miami for the second time in five years.

Waters has a long history of peddling antisemitic conspiracies and promoting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to delegitimize and demonize the State of Israel. This marks a continued effort of Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) to educate and engage our community on combatting the insidious BDS movement. Our response was multilayered and included outreach to our elected officials asking them to denounce both Roger Waters and the BDS movement. Many of them responded with public comments. We also are in contact with local concert venues and have requested that they review their discrimination policies prior to booking Waters for any future event. In addition to our Miami Herald ad which you can view here, we launched a digital campaign targeting potential concertgoers that educated them about Waters’ virulent antisemitic rhetoric; the ads received more than 250,000 impressions. We will continue to stand up against antisemitism and bigotry of all kinds, no matter where or when it arises.
