Expanding its Strong Summer Program Offerings

The Klurman Family Day Camp (Camp Klurman) at the Galbut Family Miami Beach JCC on the Simkins Family Campus (MBJCC) is a fun-filled ten-week summer to remember, committed to providing an excellent, safe, well-rounded blend of traditional day camp activities, specialty camps, field trips, Jewish culture and amazing specialists. This summer, Camp Klurman has expanded its specialty camps by adding a unique Drone Flying Camp for children entering first through fifth grade. The camp is offered twice in one-week sessions this summer, with the second week beginning Monday, July 9. It is a self-exploratory and project-based learning camp with real-world STEM application. Children are introduced to drone flying and coding with general tutorials on safety. No prior experience is necessary; all skill levels are welcome to participate.

After Camper Jackson experienced the first week of the Drone Flying Camp he raved, “I’d give drone camp 3 thumbs up if I could!”

CEO Paul Frishman commented, “Here at the Miami Beach JCC we are always planning programs to stay ‘relevant and cutting edge’ towards the needs of our community. This year’s Drone Camp offering is clearly creating NEW excitement while our campers learn unique, innovative skills in a very fun and positive environment.

Sculptures by Sharon Dash now at the Alper JCC Futernick Art Gallery

Miami artist Sharon Dash’s unique and expressive sculptures are on view in Futernick Family Art Gallery at The Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center, 11155 SW 112th Ave, Miami, FL 33176, through May 6, 2018. Admission is free.

Ms. Dash’s award-winning work has been exhibited at juried and invitational shows locally and nationally, with continuous Best of Show and other laudable awards. Her work has been seen in such juried and invitational exhibitions as Essential Earth Invitational Ceramics Exhibition in Wayne, PA, Small Favors XI in Philadelphia, Art of Expression, Artisans on the Avenue in Lake Forth, Ceramics in Architecture at the Coral Gables Museum, Ceramic League of Miami and many more.

Ms. Dash explains: “Ceramic sculpture is my passion! Clay is a magical, expressive medium allowing endless opportunities to explore the figure and create sculpture about the human condition. My sculptures tell stories about people -- their daily lives, emotions, struggles and triumphs. The human face and amazing array of expressions and emotions it can reveal has always fascinated me and continues to be a source of inspiration. Current events, animals, and the South Florida environment also play a role in my sculptures. Each piece is hand-built using stoneware clay, created without an armature and fired in an electric kiln. I generally begin with a concept or idea and work intuitively with the clay to its final conclusion, enjoying the creative journey along the way. I hope viewers will relate to my sculptures with a sense of shared experience, wonder, reflection and an occasional smile.

The Futernick Family Art Gallery is open Sundays 1 – 4pm; Tuesdays and Fridays 9:30am – 4pm; please call for an appointment. . Visit www.alperjcc.org for more information or contact Suzy Breitner at 305.271.9000 ext. 265 or [email protected].

Jazz Concert of the Israeli and American Songbook featuring Ira Sullivan

Sunday, April 15 • 4:00pm The Alper JCC Sablotsky Cultural Arts Center presents a Jazz Concert of the Israeli and American Songbook - a unique musical project where classical Israeli songs are played in a jazz style. It is common in jazz that the American songbook is played in jazz but to the best of our knowledge, no one has taken the Israeli songbook and played it in a jazz style. This concert features legendary jazz musician, Ira Sullivan, as well as Marc Berner and Gideon Vigderhous and additional musicians of the rhythm section who will lend their musical creativity to the ensemble, making it a joy to listen to.

Ira Sullivan is a true jazz legend whose roots go back so far that he was jamming with the cool cats in Chicago for the birth of Bebop. Ira Sullivan is multi-faceted musician and composer who calls Washington, D.C. his birthplace. Around 1963, Sullivan moved to Miami to raise his family. And now over 50 years later, he will be performing at the Alper JCC’s own Russell Theater. Tickets: $15 JCC Member • $20 Community
